Our commitment to being chemical free.
Have you ever wondered why smelling a certain air freshener or perfume makes you physically ill? Have you cycled through different brands and products hoping to finally find one that won’t make you beet red or break out?
Yeah, me too. That’s why I eventually made my own.
I started paying attention to ingredients on labels over two decades ago when organic was first becoming a thing. At that time, I was in my 20s but was plagued with a variety of issues — stomach ulcers, hives, and weird flare-ups of all sorts. These issues largely informed my decision to research environmental toxins and later study Environmental Law.
In my research, I found out four main things about the use of chemicals in cosmetics:
1. that many cosmetics contain petroleum;
2. that use of the term “all-natural” is unregulated;
3. “fragrance” is proprietary and its chemical compounds are not required to be disclosed, but most fragrances contain hundreds of chemical compounds;
4. “organic” doesn’t necessarily mean high-quality.
Two decades later, I started paying more attention to skincare. In reading labels, I still found that companies claiming to be “clean” were still using fragrance. However, when I made my own face cream for the first time, I was amazed at how effective and high-quality it was compared to the store variety. The only issue was longevity.
Undoubtedly, formulating chemical-free products comes at a cost. The use of chemicals are there to improve the look, feel, and absorption of a product, especially when those products are meant to sit on the shelf for an indefinite period of time.
Regardless, when I founded Bloom & Skye, there was no question that I would refrain from using fragrance, parabens, sulfates, and chemical preservatives.
However inconvenient, my solution is to make a living product — one that is made to order, without artificial ingredients, and best if refrigerated.
Much love,
Nelly
